There are many ways of doing this but the easiest and safest way to root a Galaxy S (any variation) is using z4root.
Download the z4root APK file here and transfer it to your droid and fire away !
Why I want to root your phone ? I want to install cool useful tools like Clock Synchronize - Micro Second and Wireless Tethering which can turn your android phone to be an instant internet hotspot (I'll post something on this when I get it running on my droid!)
